Cyber Stockholm Syndrome

I was initially inspired by the fashion advertisements in Paris plastered on the street walls and framed in bus stops and metro stations. Specifically, my interest stemmed from the small disclaimer found on the image itself, “photographie retouchée.” Intrigued by this statement, I was questioning the contemporary discourse and ethics around the representation and presentation of truth, especially through imagery. Importantly in the beauty and fashion worlds, the demand for transparency in marketing and visual presentation have changed and held the industry to higher standards; however, there are many spaces left unregulated, particularly on social media. I found images created by the authority and influencers of beauty and fashion on social media and distorted my images through process of image manipulation and degradation, blurring the reality held in the images.
